Flight Standards & Kakadu Air Internship in Darwin, Northern Territory

What Is the Flight Standards/ Kakadu Air Internship?

The Flight Standards & Kakadu Air Internship is an immersive placement where selected Holmes Institute Aviation students travel to Darwin to train with one of Australia’s leading flight training and charter operators.

Students experience what it’s like to live and work in the aviation industry, from observing flight operations to assisting in aircraft maintenance and dispatch.

“It was such an incredible experience,” says Jack, a Holmes Institute Aviation student who completed his internship in Darwin. “It’s a really good opportunity to see what’s out there and get a feel of what it’s like in the charter environment. We went out to a remote island in the North-East, and it was my first time in a multi, which was a great experience.”

Why Internships Are Crucial in Aviation

1. Transition from Training to Employment

Internships bridge the gap between study and the workforce. For pilots, real-world exposure builds the confidence and situational awareness needed in the cockpit.

2. Networking with Industry Professionals

Students connect with certified pilots, operations staff, and chief flying instructors, building relationships that often lead to job offers in General Aviation.

3. Developing Professional Skills

Interns learn aircraft handling, radio communication, maintenance coordination, and ground operations. These are all vital skills for future charter or airline pilots.

4. Employment Pathways in General Aviation

General Aviation offers diverse flying opportunities from tourism flights over Kakadu to freight transport, aerial photography, and emergency services. Many graduates begin here before progressing to commercial airlines.

Life in Darwin: Flying in Australia’s Top End

Darwin’s unique location makes it an incredible environment for pilot training and professional development. Students experience challenging weather patterns, diverse airspace, and the adventure of flying across some of Australia’s most remote and beautiful landscapes.

It’s this mix of hands-on flying, industry mentorship, and real-world conditions that makes the Darwin internship so valuable and why Holmes Institute Aviation students return more career-ready than ever.
